Do Horses really need to see the dentist?

Yes! Every horse over the age of 5 needs to have a yearly dental exam. Horses that are 5 years and younger are shedding their deciduous teeth (baby teeth).

A few common dental problems are:

- Sharp enamel points that forms on cheek teeth (which will cause lacerations on tongue and cheek)

- Hooks and Ramps forming on the upper and lower cheek teeth

- Incorrect incisor angles which puts pressure on the TMJ

- Infected tooth

- Periodontal disease (gum disease)

- Weight loss

- Dropping food (quidding) or eating slowly

- Head or mouth shy

- Head shaking

- Discomfort when bitted

- Extreme salivation

Do you recognize any of these signs in your horse?

If so, your horse may need to see the dentist!
